Assumptions; A Collaborative Project

Two posters, the top one saying “Assumptions” and the bottom one saying “How it really is”. Each of them feature all the participants, with text of assumptions made of them and then challenging those.

In collaboration with the 11 participants, I explored the purpose of assumptions in this project. Exploring where they originate from, the purpose of them, and then challenging them. I created two posters, the top one saying “Assumptions” and the bottom one saying “How it really is”. Each poster features all the participants, with text of assumptions made of them in the top poster and then challenging those in the poster below.

Having supervised the exhibition for several hours over the two weeks it was up, I both had conversations with viewers, and also overhead conversations about the work. I aim to spark conversation through my work, initiating conversations that lead to valuable insights about one another. By listening to each others perspectives, we have so much to learn.

Assumptions that participants provided about themselves at times uncovered insecurities, rather than direct assumptions that had been reported to them. It’s so important to be able to have such a vulnerable conversation, and I thank and credit all the participants for being so open and honest.
